Makenna Phillips
Master’s of Social Work Intern
Makenna Phillips is an intern from the University of Maryland School of Social Work. She offers in-person and telehealth sessions at our Laurel office, working under the supervision of Denaysha Bowen, LCSW-C.
Makenna brings a grounded, compassionate approach to therapy, rooted in a deep commitment to mental health and social justice. With three years of experience in the mental health field, she has worked in various settings including prisons, halfway houses, juvenile detention centers, and a Montessori school. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and Criminology and has experience working in supportive environments like halfway houses and childcare centers. Makenna understands and has worked with the complex intersections of mental health, trauma, and lived experience. She is currently pursuing a Master of Social Work to further her knowledge and advance her practice as a mental health professional.
Makenna believes everyone has the strength and capacity to heal, and sometimes they just need the right support to uncover it. She strives to offer a non-judgmental space where clients—children, adolescents, and adults—feel safe enough to explore both their struggles and strengths.
Makenna utilizes a person-centered, strength-based approach alongside cognitive behavioral therapy in her sessions, while continuously exploring new treatment modalities. She is adept at addressing a wide range of issues, including ADHD, anger management, anxiety, depression, body image and self-esteem concerns, stress management, trauma, family concerns, and life transitions.
Outside of her internship and school Makenna enjoys cooking, hiking, yoga and reading.
